What to Expect Before, During, and After a Polygraph Test

If you have been asked to take a polygraph test, it is normal to feel a little nervous.  Many people are unsure of what will happen, how long it will take, and what they should do to prepare.  The good news is that a professional polygraph examination is a structured process designed to be clear, fair, and thorough.  Knowing what to expect before, during, and after a polygraph test can help you feel more relaxed and confident.

Before the Polygraph Test

The first step usually begins before you ever sit in the chair.  You may be asked to schedule an appointment and provide basic information about the issue being tested.  In some cases, you may be told the general topic of the examination, such as theft, misconduct, infidelity, or a pre-employment screening matter.

Before your appointment, it is important to get a good night’s sleep, eat a normal meal, and avoid alcohol or illegal drugs.  If you take prescription medication, continue taking them as directed unless your doctor tells you otherwise.  You should also bring a valid photo ID and be prepared to discuss the matter openly and honestly.

A polygraph test is not a trick or surprise attack.  One of the most important parts of the process happens before the actual testing begins.  This is called the pre-test interview.  During this phase, the examiner explains the procedure, reviews the questions with you, and makes sure you understand exactly what is being asked.  Remember, there are NO surprises.

During the Polygraph Test

During the examination, the examiner will place sensors on your body to record physiological responses such as breathing, heart activity, and Electro-dermal activity.  Some examiners still believe this is sweat gland activity, but science has changed.  They will also have sensors that are used to detect movement.  These sensors do not cause pain, and the process is non-invasive.

Once the test begins, you will be asked a series of carefully reviewed questions.  The examiner, or more likely the computer, will ask each question in a clear and direct way, and you will answer with a simple “yes” or “no.” The goal is to collect data while keeping the process controlled and consistent.  This is one reason for the computer to ask the questions.

It is important to listen carefully, sit still, and answer truthfully.  Trying to outsmart the test or use so-called “countermeasures” can make the process more difficult and may result in a deliberate attempted to artificially influence the test data, which is almost always an immediate fail.  The best thing you can do is be honest, follow instructions, and stay calm.

After the Polygraph Test

After the testing portion is complete, the examiner will review the charts and analyze the results.  In some cases, you may be given preliminary results the same day.  In other cases, usually involving chart clarity, the findings may need additional review before a final opinion is issued.

You may also be asked follow-up questions if something needs clarification.  This does not automatically mean there is a problem.  It simply means the examiner wants to make sure the information is complete and accurate.

A professional polygraph examination is designed to seek the truth in a fair and respectful manner.  Understanding the process can take away much of the fear and uncertainty.  If you are scheduled for a test, the best approach is simple: be prepared, be cooperative, and be truthful.

Understanding what to expect during a polygraph test can make a big difference in how comfortable you feel.
